How to Create a Personal Moving Inventory
How to create a personal moving inventory? Counting all the things you own can be boring and daunting at the same time. Here is a tip to help save time and hassle when it comes to creating a personal moving inventory.
Estimates for moving based on average amounts of items based on your house size don’t work in the mountains because the majority of our homes sell furnished. That means we are taking a subset of valuable items with us in our moves. The only way we can estimate reliably is to have a list of items you are taking with you.
Unfortunately creating that list from memory is unreliable. We tend to stop seeing things that have been in our environment for a long time. It is often the case during onsite visits that I ask about an item and the person “remembers” it though she had not mentioned it before. This is common. We can bypass these blind spots by using our smart phones.
If you walk room by room and take a photo with your smart phone you will not have to work very hard. Don’t overthink it, just snap the photos. When you are done you will have your inventory in visual form. If you decide an item does not go you simply delete that photo. If you want to add items, snap more photos.
There are several easy ways we can translate a file full of photos into a reliable estimate. You can call us and we can enter the items into our software as we talk. You can send us the photos. Or if the idea of taking the photos does not appeal to you we can visit you at your home and take them for you. In all cases you will have to tell us what you want to take and what stays behind.
When you see items like a lamp sitting on a table that both go, take a picture of the lamp and a separate picture of the table. Recall we are noting each item in software that calculates weight and volume, so “lamp and table” is not as useful as 1 Lamp, 1 Side Table.
We hope this tip will make it easier to take a personal inventory and help us generate a reliable estimate. With this we can ensure you have a successful plan and a stress free move. We look forward to seeing you on moving day!
